Look Up by Kimberly Coverly
Imitating her heartbeat, the waves crash.
After years in the water, they were one,
Her mocha waves flowing at the same angle
As the crystal clear ebb and flow of tide.
She blends with the landscape, and it with her.
Her tan skin one shade darker than the sand,
The texture of her scales one with the rock.
Moon shines on the clear surface of the water,
Colors bouncing brilliantly around,
Mocking the sunset that rises in morn,
But, not fooling the quick- witted mermaid.
Heavy clouds provide heavy evidence,
It is nighttime and no one will catch her,
Pondering the ways of the two-footed.
Time alone allows her to look up,
Something she is rarely able to do.
The air gets fuzzier the more you look
Ahead at Earth’s brilliant, burning star.
A sleek, slate gray creature jumps through the brim
He too will do anything to look up,
Toward a world that is so different
Than the dark blue liquid he sees daily.
Over extending his arch, he gazes,
One day he hopes to reach those misty clouds,
But, for now he is frozen at this height.
The landscape will never change from this scene,
They will never reach the bright white night light,
They will try endlessly, for it brings hope,
A world full of more than just one color,
But they are meant to be one with the sea.
