A Poem Beginning With a Line by Pablo Neruda and Ending With a Line by John Koethe
By Jimmy Chen
I don't love you as if you were a rose of salt, topaz, or sand.
You gave me nothing in return for companionship
Like a gift that was never appreciated.
I don't love you as if you were a rose of salt, topaz, or marble.
That emotion does not exist in comparison
As if history can be rewritten or if a race could be reset.
What I feel for you reflects beyond time
And all the intricate years between.
