Sadie and Maggie
By:
Lauren Jernberg
Sadie
went to college.
Maggie
stayed at home.
Sadie
lived her life
Even
with all her loans.
A
loan for this a loan for that
She
couldn’t even stand.
But
she made the most of it
And
found herself a man.
Someone
who would love her
Even
through a storm.
Someone
who was worthy
To
make sure she wasn’t harmed.
They
were to be married
But
she never told the truth.
And
when Maggie, Ma, and Pa found out
There
was nothing she could do.
But
to her surprise
They
were very proud.
They
were very happy
To
have this guy around.
They
grew old together
Till
death did they part.
One
before the other.
She
got the head start.
Sadie and
Maud
By: Gwendolyn
Brooks
Maud went to
college.
Sadie stayed
at home.
Sadie
scraped life
With a
fine-tooth comb.
She didn't
leave a tangle in.
Her comb
found every strand.
Sadie was
one of the livingest chits
In all the
land.
Sadie bore
two babies
Under her
maiden name.
Maud and Ma
and Papa
Nearly died
of shame.
When Sadie
said her last so-long
Her girls
struck out from home.
(Sadie had
left as heritage
Her
fine-tooth comb.)
Maud, who
went to college,
Is a thin
brown mouse.
She is
living all alone
In this old
house.
