Lucile O’brian is a 63 year old
French widow. She grew up in Paris and moved to America when she was 17 where
she met her late husband Gerald. Gerald was a lumberjack and they lived a poor
but happy life with no children of their own. Her father was a writer and her mother
was a painter. She has worked as Bethany
Fitzgerald’s maid for 10 years now. Lucile helped raise Bethany’s 3 children
and has always dreamed of traveling back home but her new attachment to Bethany
and her family has made it difficult. When Bethany’s husband died 3 years ago
from cancer Lucile knew she had to stay.
We came here
with plans of taking a rest
Away from
her busy stay at home life
Her children
tagged along for the long drive
Excited for
the breeze of the ocean
The old
beach house hasn’t seen visitors
For about a
year or maybe longer
Since George
has passed away things are different
Bethany lost
the sparkle in her eye
She hasn’t
seen anyone since that day
But here she
is dancing in the wet sand
This
handsome man has swept her off her feet
Looking
deeply into each other’s eyes
The world seems to disappear around them
They just
hold another tighter, closer
I can tell
they are both head over heels
Scared for
her to get hurt when we leave soon
When we got
here she met this man at lunch
She left the
kids with me as they chatted
This whole
week spent here attached at the hip
But there is
a sparkle in her eye now
As the rain
washes over them they seem
Unbothered
as if they were in some trance
I try to get
her to leave but she won’t
He holds her
in his strong arms as they laugh
His butler sings along encouraging
Flashbacks
of my husband and our first dance
Feelings
wash over me as I give in
Dance with
the butler until the song ends
Two years
later here we are in this church
A double marriage
for both me and her
