If October is....(Promt Poem) by Connor Kaplan

If October is…. by Connor Kaplan
If October is the time of year I notice I am older,
than May is the time of year when the aches for summer to begin and to once feel older again.

Earlier I saw a man
or women biking on a road
that has been recently paved.
On the side are a mixture of trees that wither and evergreens.
The trees follow a creak
that slices through a river like a road through a forest.
As I go over a bridge made of metal that never rust
I find the biker to have stopped
to be looking at a parade of ducks floating on the water’s edge.

And this too, a cross showing the good someone has done.
Does this mean that the person was truly good?
Maybe he sinned when others were not looking.
So is this person deserving of a tomb shining in the light
as if a soul is traveling to the afterlife, to heaven?

Once in a dream I looked up to see an army of sharks.
Startled I stared at the beauty that is
the great white, the whale shark, the goblin shark, ect.
But eventually after an eon of shark gazing I noticed
that I was not in a scuba suit and I woke up.
I never thought life could be so boring.
Life outside the human expectation seems so wonderful.
The vibrant dangerous life other organisms have is fascinating
but is it tedious doing the something over and over for them?
We are born, we live, we reproduce, we care for our children, and then we die.
So monochrome or is it?
As the band Cake say in one of their songs,
“When we are born we start dying.”

Once in October I “fell in love”
but she did not feel the same so I let her go,
only to “fall” once again.

But it is not October, it is May and I feel older,
maybe it is that school is ending.
Maybe it’s the parades of clouds disappearing
from the winter sky.
The sun majestically shinning through.
