Gemstone by: Nicole Busch

Gemstone
By: Nicole Busch

Lay down these precious words, on this paper
Before your mind like shiny, clear jewels,
Placed in solid condition, by two hands.

The choice of placement, set so precocious
In the careful choice of place, set, design
Before your own body and your own mind.

Solidarity of the silver band,
The small sized finger placing the ring on
Or a single gem placed in the middle.

Miniature gemstones cautiously laid
Along the small sides of the main event
Wrapping up the central show together.

These poems, these significant words with
Special meanings and many syllables
Metaphors, similes, all contrasting.

Putting endless worlds into your made up
Imagination, each world different,
Yet so similar from one another.

Each special world like its very own board game,
Fighting to the finish, winning, loosing,
A game of Trouble, hard to find the gem.

The game coming to a close, gemstones still
Not located, no worrying around
For the game of Life is once again found.

This significant game represents hope
For these gemstones still remaining unearthed,
A discovery, of precious gemstones.

In this thin circle we call a band, each
Gemstone a word, a careful hand placed stone,
Diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls.

RipRap
BY: GARY SNYDER

Lay down these words
Before your mind like rocks.
             placed solid, by hands
In choice of place, set
Before the body of the mind
             in space and time:
Solidity of bark, leaf, or wall
             riprap of things:
Cobble of milky way,
             straying planets,
These poems, people,
             lost ponies with
Dragging saddles—
             and rocky sure-foot trails.
The worlds like an endless
             four-dimensional
Game of Go.
             ants and pebbles
In the thin loam, each rock a word
             a creek-washed stone
Granite: ingrained
with torment of fire and weight
Crystal and sediment linked hot
             all change, in thoughts,
As well as things.
