Enoch's Alphabet by Kimberly Stutevoss

Enoch’s Alphabet

Little Enoch learned from his lettered blocks
A is for armadillo and B is
For boomerang while C is for cotton
And D is for dancing all over and
E is for elephants that have huge trunks
And F is for frogs that croak in the night
He continues with G that stands for goat
And then moves to H for horses and hope
Iguana is for I and then he moves
To J the fastest letter as a jaguar
Then a hoppy one next with kangaroo’s
With K who carry their babies in their
Pouch with Lemurs for L following them
M is next with a silly pair of brown
Monkeys hanging from a tree then N with
A newt that can regrow his lost limbs
He then learns that O is for octopus
And that P is for porcupines with long
And sharp needles. Q stands for quail with their
Beautiful feathers and R for the red
Fox who competes with S, the sun bear as
Ruler of the forest and T for the
Tiger as ruler of the jungle and
As he gets closer to the end, U is
For the urchin under the sea and V
Is for vulture who flies above the blue
Sea while the whales for W swim deep below
With the x-ray tetra fish for X and
The Y for yak is far away on the
Plains near Z, for zebra eating green grass

Enoch’s Blocks

BY OLIVIA CLARE
Little Enoch learned his colors from lettered blocks

(for A is the color of fleet,
B is the color of war and demolition,
C is the color of echo and blur,
&c.) and built
a bricolage:

So CAB was a whirring warbler.
BACH was the Spanish Armada crashing
                                      and crashing.
And ENOCH he couldn’t describe.

And when it reached the height of Enoch,
standing, he tore whole tongues
down to their colors.
