Elevator Associations by Kathleen Fellows

Elevator Associations by Kathleen Fellows

We wait in the elevator
Less than or equal to happy
Between department store levels
My sisters stand tall and bicker

Less than or equal to happy
My father admires the music
My sisters stand tall and bicker
Only I seem to notice

My father admires the music
My mother looks to me and smiles
Only I seem to notice
My mother’s eyes full of distrust

We wait in the elevator
Between department store levels
“I think this is your last stroller ride”
My mother speaks to me and us all

My sisters giggle at my state
My father only hears the music
The ride takes an infinite time
I see the lift sink inwards

My father only hears the music
No one understands my distress
I see the lift sink inward
What incredibly stressful news

No one understands my stress
There is no help from my sisters
What incredibly stressful news
I strain in the stroller to see

My mother continues to smile
My father is completely useless
My sisters giggle at my state
The ride takes an infinite time
