Breaking
Out
By Levi Kyllo
Thinking back on heartbreak, tears cease to fall
Mind failing, as well as the body, to
Express what the heart has been screaming out
For a while now. It’s breaking through, like the
Hulk busting out of quarantine, rage and anger
Fueling his strength, his fists ready to smash,
Heart nonexistent, until he relaxes.
He wants to be understood, not a puppet with
strings.
Society is no longer his puppet-master,
Breaking free from this uniform of emotion he
Constantly hides behind. The curtains shading him,
Although comforting and sheltering, are
Torn down. He shows himself to the public,
Like a newborn being brought out to the car
After leaving the hospital, his first time
Experiencing the piercing sun, the
Burning of his eyes when caught looking too long,
This new, wonderful setting of emotion.
Vulnerable, yet free, wanting to explore
This new realm, he takes it upon himself
To write about the things that make him most
Happy. He does this for everything now,
Writing away, like the sunrise coming
Day after day. It pleases him to be
Here, he feels welcome to the touch of his paper and
pencil.
This goes on for a while, but it’s not quite enough,
Human interaction is now his gateway drug.
Craving familiarity and touch,
He heads home to see his family, waiting
For him to speak of his emergence.
