Case Studies in the Cultural and Political Uses of Popular
Music By Rachael Jones
Energy encompassing the room as
Bass from the sound system blasts through the air
As the postwar regret sounds its alarm
Singing the emotional, mournful tune
Children expressing themselves, through music
Telling tales of ganja, the green weed
The choices we made, beaten paths we took
The right route or the wrong decision made
Conform to the oppressed society
All governments making stipulations
Controlling the lips of French as they kiss
Honoring the family heritage
Authority grants the tools to survive
Keeping doors to the after-life sealed shut
Submissive like the heart, beating to the
Inhale of one's chest as they take a breath
Fighting the end result of the graveyards
One may call it, smoking with the peace pipe,
Others say “creating a living corpse”
If stoners do the dance with Mary Jane
The deceased legacy may be forgot
We descent from a line of warriors
Who fought for survival, staying alive
Those who lived in the moment, no regrets
Obedient to the world’s surroundings
Children's songs should be filled with ecstasy
Free to express and celebrate themselves
No stipulations just prospect for hope
For one day on which children will be free
Now, turn up the volume and play your song
