M and K by Kimberly Coverly
K studied hard and left home
M studied too but never did roam.
M stayed on task with many lists,
And never let her self get pissed.
She didn’t let her
smile quiver,
Or her warmth fade at the sight of a shiver.
K was the most cynical chick,
Giving life the swiftest of kicks.
K gave her life to him,
He never let her go out on a limb.
M and Mom and Dad were filled with concern,
They thought that K would never learn.
When M finally said farewell,
She worried she would never quell.
(The worries or fears of K,
or any other problem that led her astray.)
K, who studied hard,
Eventually put up her guard,
But not soon enough to block that man,
Who lives with her and ruined her plan.
Sadie and Maud by Gwendolyn Brooks
Maud went to college.
Sadie stayed at home.
Sadie scraped life
With a fine-tooth comb.
She didn't leave a tangle in.
Her comb found every strand.
Sadie was one of the livingest chits
In all the land.
Sadie bore two babies
Under her maiden name.
Maud and Ma and Papa
Nearly died of shame.
When Sadie said her last so-long
Her girls struck out from home.
(Sadie had left as heritage
Her fine-tooth comb.)
Maud, who went to college,
Is a thin brown mouse.
She is living all alone
In this old house.
