Only the Horses By Kayla Hall

Only The Horses
My grandfather had a ranch;
All I cared about was the horses.
As proof that I was there I received an old horse shoe
Now it is lost but then it was like a Holy Grail.

All I cared about was the horses
I wanted to go on trail rides every day.
As proof I was there I received an old horse shoe,
I kept it for good luck.

I wanted to go on trail rides every day
Not much has changed since then.
I kept it for luck
I kept it to remember that trip.

Not much has changed since then,
At least when horses are mentioned.
I kept it to remember that trip.
There was dirt in the places nails belonged.

At least when horses are mentioned
I am still the little girl I was.
There was dirt in the places nails belonged
I tried to clean it so my horse could wear it.

I am still the little girl I was
Hopeful that one day I would have a horse.
I tried to clean it so my horse could wear it,
I never got a horse, parents didn’t even think about it.

Hopeful that one day I would have a horse
I named the horse I rode on the ranch.
I never got a horse, parents didn’t even think about it
I got a horse shoe though, for me it was enough.

I named the horse I rode on the ranch
It already had a name but this way it was mine.
I got a horse shoe though, for me it was enough
A part of the horse was all I needed.

  1. "I got a horse shoe though, for me it was enough" was a very nice line that gave hope to a wish that never came true. Ironically I own a horse so I can relate to wanting a horse when I was a little kid and holding onto anything that could relate to a horse.
Some day you could still get one!

Kayla I really like these lines! It really helps solidify the fascination with horses that you have and how it still may show up in your life! great poem! - Heidi Curtis
