Fairy Ring by Ivy Jones

Fairy Ring

Variety of their shapes and sizes
allows a passerby to see the ring.
This only happens every so often.
That the circle of mushrooms is perfect
and awaits the fairies to dance and sing.

Careful not to step in the fairy ring
it has been rumored that the circle will
trap you until the fairies want you free.
However, they will not come until night
when the lights have gone out and fire flies
start to glow to light the pathway for them.

Some fairies travel by insect or wind;
but the queen of the fairies needs none of
that for she is graceful and elegant.
Her powers allow the seasons to change
from winter snow fall to the blossoms
that bloom in spring. She will always be there
to guide the work that must be done every
year. The mystery that still remains so.

No person alive has seen this happen.
Some have tried to take photographs of this;
but none have succeeded with this hard task.
There once were two girls who said they had seen
fairies in the forest outside of town.
They had no proof of the experience
that they explained to friends and family.

In the end it really didn't matter;
because these two girls experienced what
most people only dream about and will
never fully understand the magic
the fairies were willing to offer them.

Poem of the Day: Mushrooms by Laura Kasischke

Like silent naked monks huddled
around an old tree stump, having
spun themselves in the night
out of thought and nothingness—

And God so pleased with their silence
He grants them teeth and tongues.

Like us.

How long have you been gone?
A child’s hot tears on my bare arms.
