Alien Voice By Melissa Campana

Alien Voice

How do you know, asked the boy with the ball,
That when I throw this, it won’t disappear
Up into the sky, way beyond the stars,
Past Saturn’s rings and through new galaxies?

How do you know that an alien child
Won’t come across it while he is gliding
Over his town in his flying saucer
And bring it home to his alien mom?

How do you know that his alien dad
Won’t stare at it until he knows it’s safe
For his son to put on his head because
Let’s be realistic, by the time it
Travels way beyond the stars and passes
Saturn’s rings, into a new galaxy,
It probably won’t look much like a ball,
But more like a deflated piece of crap.

So, mom and dad, I hope that you do know,
That when I throw this, it won’t disappear
Up into the sky, way beyond the stars,
Past Saturn’s rings and through new galaxies,
Because I love this ball and enjoy it
Much more than an alien kid would if
His dad inspected it and allowed him
To wear it on his head as a strange hat
Seeing as they would never have guessed that
Before it traveled beyond the stars, past
Saturn’s rings, and into their galaxy,
It was spherical and used as a toy
By an alien boy with only two
Eyes, ears, arms, hands, legs, and feet, and one nose.
And one mouth that spoke an alien voice.

How do you
BY KABIR
Poem of the day 4/6/13

How do you,
Asks the chief of police,
Patrol a city
Where the butcher shops
Are guarded by vultures;
Where bulls get pregnant,
Cows are barren,
And calves give milk
Three times a day;
Where mice are boatmen
And tomcats the boats
They row;
Where frogs keep snakes
As watchdogs,
And jackals
Go after lions?

Does anyone know
What I’m talking about?
Says Kabir.
